Penitentes /// Penitents

“Visita Iglesia”

 

Como toda Cristiandad, tenemos la misa de Crisma por la mañana y el Lavatorio de pies por la tarde seguido con una procesión de la Eucaristía.  Salen también en este día los penitentes.  Aunque no esta sancionado por la iglesia católica, tenemos muchos.   La primera vez que vi penitentes, ¡LLORE! Todavía lloro cuando les veo. 

 

Tenemos también la tradición de visitar iglesias por la noche.  Originalmente, te vas caminando como penitencia, pero hoy se usa el coche.  Tienes que visitar catorce iglesias haciendo tu vía crucis.  Todas las iglesias están vestidas para la ocasión. 

 

Like the whole of Christendom, we have the Chrism mass in the morning and the Washing of the feet in the afternoon.  This is followed by the procession of the Holy Eucharist.  On this day the penitents come out.  Although not sanctioned by the Church, we have many.  The first time I saw penitents, I CRIED!  I still cry when I see them. 

 

We also have the tradition called “Visita Iglesia.”  One has to visit fourteen churches and do the Stations of the Cross.  One station for each church.  Originally, one would have to walk to the churches as penance.  All churches are decorated for the occasion.
